Why is it that when a member carries out a vehicle search the registration numbers are withheld? The only one shown is the member’s own number. This makes it impossible to identify an individual vehicle and contact the owner. Surely if the messaging service is anonymous there is no harm in showing the number.

    Hello Peter,

It’s because the Vehicle Registration can be classed as Personal Information. It is information that identifies personally owned property and as such allowing anyone in the Club to access it can fall foul of GDPR.

The GDPR applies to ‘personal data’ meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier.

This definition provides for a wide range of personal identifiers to constitute personal data, including name, identification number, location data or online identifier, reflecting changes in technology and the way organisations collect information about people.

I would suggest that if a member is interested in speaking to the owner of a specific vehicle, then they should approach the committee who should then ask the owner if they can contact the member concerned, or if they’re happy for you to pass on their details.

The vehicle register therefore does have to be anonymised in this way for the regulations. However it is an excellent way of members finding other members who have the same vehicle of similar age, have documented similar upgrades, might have had to solve similar problems etc.

    Cheers,
    Brian.
